Mainlanders spent 24bln yuan in HK last year

Chinanews, Hong Kong, Feb. 25 �C Visitors from China’s mainland to Hong
Kong had increased by ten times to 6.6 million people by the end of 2006
since Chinese mainlanders were permitted to travel to Hong Kong as
individual tourists in 2003, said Li Guodong, director of the Immigration
Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, on February 24.
Sources from the Hong Kong tourism industry reveal that Hong Kong gained
24 billion yuan worth of profit from mainland tourists last year,
according to the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Pao.
Normally nearly 40 percent of the mainland tourists experience day trips
in Hong Kong, consequently retailing industry is the biggest beneficiary.
Female cosmetics sell fairly hot. A spokesman of a chain makeup shop in
Hong Kong said about 10 percent of their customers were from the
mainland, and they were quite “generous”. “Some customers from the
mainland even swept over 10,000 yuan worth of the cosmetics on one shop
counter,” he said, adding that mostly these customers bought them not
only for themselves, but also for their family members and friends.
Incomplete statistics show that mainland tourists contributed to 60
percent of the consumption of Hong Kong during the Spring Festival
holiday.

Iraq coach Jorvan Vieira on Tuesday slammed the Asian Football
Confederation (AFC) for leaving his players waiting for hours in hotel
lobby.

Iraqi players had to wait for four hours at the Prince Hotel lobby in
Kuala Lumpur after arriving from Bangkok on Monday before only eight
rooms were made available for 31 people, he said.

“We arrived at the hotel at 5:00 pm (local time) and then waited four
hours for only eight rooms,” said Vieira.

Vieira said the Iraqi team had planned to leave Bangkok on Sunday but
stayed an extra day on the AFC’s advice.

“The AFC said if we come to Malaysia on Sunday, we would have to stay in
another hotel and then move to the Prince Hotel the next day,” he said.

“The AFC must realise that this is not a tourist group. We are a national
football team. They gave us guarantees but they could not keep those
guarantees,” he complained.

Iraq will play against South Korea in the semi-final at the National
Stadium Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

China yesterday finalized a contract with a consortium, led by the
US-based Westinghouse Electric Co, to build four nuclear power reactors
in the eastern part of the country.

Neither party revealed the amount involved in the contract but earlier
media reports had estimated it to be $8 billion.

China will use Westinghouse’s AP1000 technology to build the four
reactors, two of which will be in Sanmen, Zhejiang Province, and the
others in Haiyang, Shandong Province.

The cooperation between China and the US will be “crucial” in the
development of the country’s third generation nuclear power technology,
Vice-Premier Zeng Peiyan said.

“The contract will result in the first-ever use of advanced US nuclear
power technology in China,” Westinghouse President and Chief Executive
Stephen Tritch said.

Based on standard Westinghouse pressurized water reactor technology,
AP1000 is “the safest, most advanced nuclear power technology in the
world”. It has been chosen for at least 12 reactors in the US to be built
in the next 10 to 12 years.

The deal is expected to generate at least 5,000 jobs for Westinghouse and
its consortium partners, the company said.

Work on the first reactor is expected to begin in 2009, and it will
become operational in late 2013. The other three are expected to come on
line between 2014 and 2015.

Japan’s Toshiba took majority control of Westinghouse last October. Two
months later China signed an MOU with the company for the four reactors
after it outbid competitors Areva of France and Atomstroiexport of Russia
following a two-year negotiation process.

Nuclear power is the most important electricity generating method after
thermal power and hydropower in China, and the country has become the
third-largest nuclear power producer in Asia. Only Japan and South Korea
generate more nuclear power.

All nuclear reactors in operation or being constructed in China have
employ the first- or second-generation technology from France, Canada or
Russia.

This year the country formed the State Nuclear Power Technology Corp
(SNPTC), which is mainly in charge of developing third-generation nuclear
power technologies. The registered capital of SNPTC is 4 billion yuan
($528.89 million).

The central government will fund 60 percent of the company, and the rest
will come from four large State-owned enterprises, including the
country’s two nuclear conglomerates CNNC and China Guangdong Nuclear
Power Holding Co.

The housing prices in 70 large-and medium-sized cities in China continued
to rise in June, up 7.1 percent over the same period last year.

Last month, the prices of newly-built commercial housing units were up
7.4 percent year-on-year, according to figures released Monday by the
National Development and Reform Commission in cooperation with the
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The cities include Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

The prices of low-cost housing rose 1.4 percent and the prices of
expensive housing went up 8.5 percent. The cities of Beihai, Shenzhen,
Nanjing, Beijing and Shijiazhuang reported higher-than-average price
hikes, the commission said. The housing prices in Beihai went up 15.5
percent and the prices in Shenzhen were up 13.9 percent.

Prices of second-hand houses in those cities were up 7.8 percent last
month over the same period last year and one percent higher than the
previous month.

Rising house prices have been a major bugbear of the Chinese people in
recent years as new houses are too expensive for most urban residents.
Speculation by domestic and overseas investors has been blamed as one of
the reasons for the price hikes.

The government has been keen to tame the wild property market as it has
sparked grave public concern over housing security and is fueling the
fast expansion of investment and bank lending.

China”s real estate investment soared 28.5 percent from a year earlier
to 988.7 billion yuan (130.6 billion U.S. dollars) in the first half of
2007, according to the NBS.

The housing prices in 70 large-and medium-sized cities in China continued
to rise in June, up 7.1 percent over the same period last year.

Last month, the prices of newly-built commercial housing units were up
7.4 percent year-on-year, according to figures released Monday by the
National Development and Reform Commission in cooperation with the
National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The cities include Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

The prices of low-cost housing rose 1.4 percent and the prices of
expensive housing went up 8.5 percent. The cities of Beihai, Shenzhen,
Nanjing, Beijing and Shijiazhuang reported higher-than-average price
hikes, the commission said. The housing prices in Beihai went up 15.5
percent and the prices in Shenzhen were up 13.9 percent.

Prices of second-hand houses in those cities were up 7.8 percent last
month over the same period last year and one percent higher than the
previous month.

The number of Macao’s visitor arrivals reached 1,921,384 in June, a
remarkable year-on-year rise of 20.3 percent, according to official
statistics issued Friday.

The figures from the government-run Statistics and Census Service (SCS)
showed that the majority of the visitors in the month came from China’s
mainland (51.8 percent), Hong Kong (32.2 percent) and Taiwan (6.3
percent).

Among the mainland visitors, some 50 percent traveled to Macao under the
Individual Visit Scheme, which frees mainland tourists from the group
tour.

Macao, the only part of China where casino gaming is legal, has been
enhancing its fame as a tourism destination with the aid of the booming
gaming industry.

Macao’s visitor arrivals see rise in June

The number of Macao’s visitor arrivals reached 1,921,384 in June, a
remarkable year-on-year rise of 20.3 percent, according to official
statistics issued Friday.

The figures from the government-run Statistics and Census Service (SCS)
showed that the majority of the visitors in the month came from China’s
mainland (51.8 percent), Hong Kong (32.2 percent) and Taiwan (6.3
percent).

Among the mainland visitors, some 50 percent traveled to Macao under the
Individual Visit Scheme, which frees mainland tourists from the group
tour.

Macao, the only part of China where casino gaming is legal, has been
enhancing its fame as a tourism destination with the aid of the booming
gaming industry.
